Obituary For Patrick Oliver Ryan

It is with great sadness that the family of Patrick Oliver Ryan announces his passing on 12th November 2023 at Haywood House Hospice, Nottingham. Patrick was born in Clonmel, Ireland, on 15th July 1962 to the late Mrs. Mary Bridget Ryan and Mr. Maurice Ryan. Patrick leaves to cherish many happy memories his loving wife Kris Ryan, his son Isaac Ryan, step daughter Ellen Gregory and step son Lewis Cumming, his sister Elizabeth Ryan and brothers John Ryan, William Ryan, Michael Ryan and Maurice Ryan.

Patrick was a devoted and loving family man. He was a wonderful husband and father to his three children and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family at home and in Ireland.

In 1996 he changed career after training in Counselling and Psychotherapy and specialised in Addictions Counselling after moving into the Health Service Executive in Dublin in 1999.

Patrick took up Shotokan Karate as a martial art when he was 18 and studied it for most of his adult life reaching a level of 4th Dan Black Belt. He taught Karate in Dublin for many years and was a much loved sensei, devoted to his students. He was described by those he taught as kind, patient. compassionate and dedicated to his pupils.

Patrick over the years had many interests and hobbies, sport was a great passion of his and included swimming, cycling, running and going to the gym. He completed a wide range of sporting events including triathlons, the Rough Runner, Castle to Castle 10K run in Warwickshire and the Sheriff 125 mile bike ride in Nottingham. He was an avid golfer and loved spending time with his friends on the golf course.

Patrick's memory will be forever cherished. He was known for his warmth, compassion, kindness and generosity. He bought a smile to everyone's face with his wonderful sense of humour and always found the time to listen and spend with his family and wide circle of friends. My sincere condolences to Patrick's family and friends. I was so shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. I was fortunate to work for Patrick at Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust over fourteen years ago. He was a great manager, full of life and enthusiasm. I am grateful for the professional input he gave to me at the start of my career. Rest in Peace, Patrick. Adam M

Pat was an uncle who inspired us all on how to live life to the fullest. He showed us that you can have more than one career in this lifetime. I'll never forget him introducing me to Kris and their beaming smiles of happiness together. I looked forward to seeing Pat's updates on Facebook, his Christmas on the beach with Kris or their meals out where he affectionately referred to Kris as "my beautiful wife". My heart goes out to Kris, Isaac, Ellie, Lewis, all the Ryan's, his work colleagues and friends. May you find comfort in the positive memories of Pat. From Jeanette Ryan

Dia dhuit, Pat. It's hard to know what to add to what has already been said or to put in to words the level of loss yours brings. There was a charisma about you that meant you were looked up to by everyone, younger, older and contemporaries alike. A huge part of my childhood memories are of your summer visits from the big smoke or across the pond and the added life you brought into the house then and always. Thoughts today are with Kris, Isaac, Ellie, Lewis, mam and the uncles. Ar dheis DΓ© go raibh a anam dΓlis.

  • 07/12/2023

I only knew Pat for a short while, but what a generous, kind, big hearted, softly spoken gent he was. My life is the richer for having met him.

  • 07/12/2023

Growing up in Ballyporeen, we were always excited to know when Pat would visit our grandparents. He was the adventurous one in our family, traveling to distant places and returning with exciting stories to share. We all loved having him around. His visits brought so much laughter and joy to the house, and Grandma seemed to gain a new energy whenever he was around. I remember those visits from Pat as being playful, fun, and full of life. He understood what it meant to really live and had a talent for finding the positive in any situation, spreading that positivity to those around him. He was also a great brother to Mam, with every phone call and interaction ending with her laughing and feeling rejuvenated. His stories about Isaac, Ellie, and Lewis came with a sense of pride and affection, and the love he shared for Kris and the family they built together was plain to see. My thoughts are with Kris, Isaac, Ellie, Lewis, and the Ryans during this time. Ar dheis DΓ© go raibh a anam dΓlis. CuimhnΓmid air le grΓ‘.

Patrick is and will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues across Derbyshire. I loved working with him and learnt so much from him - about leadership, about integrity and from his commitment to always do the right thing by people. I will miss his phenomenal and tireless good humour and positivity. He has left the most amazing legacy of partnerships fostered, support created, and innovation birthed. It was such a pleasure to get to know Patrick and work alongside him and I will remember him always. He will live on in our hearts, minds and through all of the fantastic work that he was rightly so proud of. My thoughts are with Kris, his family and loved ones. Much love - Jenny Appleby x

Really sorry to the passing of Patrick, and our condolences to you Kris and all the family. I will always remember Patrick fondly from our early triathlon days and various rides out for around Warwickshire, as well as the great evenings with the odd pint or two! Thinking of you all, Will B.

All my thoughts to Kris and Isaac and the family at this time. I was lucky to have spent some time with Patrick with the old gang at the Warwickshire as well as with our kids watching Isaac and Molly grow up so fast after swimming are moments I will always cherish. From a beer or two in The Almanac putting the world to rights to the spinning on the bikes with Seanna and helping me move in to a new house, a true gent! Steve x

Pat lived life on his terms and always had a smile. I will miss the chats and the banter especially on Munster Rugby games. I valued his positive perspective advice and good humour. I really appreciated it when he came over to Cork and turned up unexpectedly at my retirement ceremony this time last year. Pat could slip into the conversation no matter how long the absence or distance as if he had never been away. Rest in peace Brother. I miss you. Sincere sympathies to Kris Isaac Ellie Lewis and all my siblings.

My deepest condolences to Kris and all of Paddy's family and friends. I met Paddy via my LEJOG cycling friends and upon our first meeting his positive & never give up steely determination was evident as we racked up the miles on our bikes where he was nowhere near as bike fit as we were but he just ploughed on through. He was definitely one of those amazing people who had such an easy manner, cracking jokes and telling stories that even though I didn't spend that much time with him it felt like he'd been your friend forever. I will cherish my memories of our adventures, most were bike or beer related! The epic night out in Leeds with the over zealous amorous bearded gentleman who wouldn't leave me alone which will stay with me forever. Any of the lads that were out with us will smile at that one I think. I would say that my greatest memory & probably one of Paddy's many gifts was his ability to always enjoy the moment and take everything in. We used to wind him up if we were out on the bikes because he was forever stopping to take photos of the beauty around us and savouring the moment. I find myself now doing the same thing & when I'm stopped at the top of a hill overlooking the beautiful vista before me, I find myself looking up to the sky and just thinking of how much he would've enjoyed the moment. He will forever live in our hearts.

  • 02/12/2023

Pat, you will be sorely missed by us all. Of the uncles you were always the one who seemed to be doing things differently, off on an adventure, never afraid to try new things. You were a bit of a legend to my brother and I as you got much further in karate than either of us. You also were probably the only guy I knew who had more hair products than me! When we were younger, I remember the kids might be in one room and the adults in another but you would be the uncle who could bridge the conversation between young and old and get everyone together. Even more so with a guitar involved. I always enjoyed our chats, you'd always have me laughing and remind me not to take things too seriously. It was great to see you at your wedding last year and a lovely surprise when you turned up at my dad's retirement. You lived life to the full and I'll cherish the memories of times we had together.

I only got to know Pat such a brief time,But in this brief moment I knew instantly he was a Gentleman,Kind ,easy to talk to and funny and he definitely was one of the good ones .Sending my love to all those who loved him ,He definitely was the salts of the Earth xxx

  • 01/12/2023

Patrick was a friend and a gentleman with the kindest character. He always had time for everyone and will be greatly missed. When I think of times in the pub, sitting at home, bbq's in the garden or away at the beach I can hear his voice and laughter ringing out. Kris, Isaac, Ellie & Lewis, may you find peace and comfort in all your wonderful memories. "Don't cry because it is over, smile because it happened" Julie x

  • 01/12/2023

I have so many good memories with Patrick but my favourite was definitely last summer when he and Kris spent a few days down in Dunmore East with us. We played card games (uno) every night(right up until Kris won),jumped off the rocks until we created a tidal wave and messed about in the sea. It was so much fun and definitely something I will remember and cherish forever. -Erin

  • 01/12/2023

Thanks for all the memories Pat. You were always a constant in the background of my life especially those early years in London and then 20 years later you came to London Bridge to see me off to Tipp again. All the advice and wisdom meant a lot to me especially the Ryan bladder. We always looked up to you as the cool Uncle. Listening to you share stories on Bally and the family a few weeks ago is something I'll always cherish. Your strength, humour and craic were who you were. Ar dheis DΓ© go raibh a anam dΓlis

To Pat a great brother, brilliant friend and a great guy. He never lost his youthful spirit on life. We will miss all the phone calls, chats and welcome advice on all matters personal and the wider world. Pat was a great family man and always chatted about his love for Kris, Issac, Ellie and Lewis. He who so proud of them. He also kept a strong link with all his siblings and was up to date on all their lives and the lives of their children. There are so many great memories which will be aired through family gatherings and when we meet in person again. A small poem that I feels sums up Pat: High on the peaks, a man stands tall, Upon the hills coated in green, he holds his head high, He stayed through the winter, summer, spring and fall, He scales the mountains like he will never die, He is filled with vigor and that is right, In my life I have never met a soul so true, He is the master of the mountain. Patrick was an amazing man. Although he only lived a short life, it was a full one. My fondest memory of Patrick was at the wedding. I felt honoured to give away my beautiful mother, to the most sincere, and gentle man she could have married. That marked the beginning of an era cut too short. Patrick will always be remembered for his selfless generosity, intelligence, and Donald Trump impression. I love you Patrick. I hope that one day, I get to be just like you

  • 28/11/2023

My deepest condolences to all of Pats family and all my Ryan first Cousins. My favourite memory of Pat was he once knocked on my door one summer around 1992 unannounced but very welcome. Looking like a Greek God only dehydrated and soaked in sweat he exclaimed "on the map my house looked closer to the airport". This was well before google maps. Pat realised it took him two hours to walk in 25 degree night time heat with ruck sack. He was on a holidays and beach and sun was all he was looking for. Luckily it was the right time of year in Australia for both. After a full day of the beach/swimming and reading books he would come home and have dinner with water the order of the day and we talked of adventures and life. He had a calming nature with a great sense of fun. Thinking of you all at this time. Vale Pat

Our sincere condolences to Kris, Issac, Ellie & Lewis. Also to Liz, John, Mossie, Willie & Michael. The first image I have of Pat when I hear his name, was his wonderful smile. He lit up the room, especially when he was in the middle of a sing song with his guitar. I was the one of the younger cousin so he was always a BIG cousin in my eyes. Like Ailish we were in Dublin together when he gained his addiction qualification, he loved that job. He will be sadly missed. Rest in peace Pat, look over us all. Till we meet again. Patrick will always be the man in green...Irish to the core, from the beautiful lilting Cork accent to the green painted body when we ran the two castles as a team of superheroes and Patrick was the Incredible Hulk. The world will miss this gentle giant. Those of us lucky enough to have spent time in his company only come a little bit close to understanding what Kris, Isaac and his family feel without him here. Our hearts go out to you all and hope you get some solace from the fact that he made so many people smile through the years. The world will be a tinge greyer without his glow of green xx SeΓ‘nna Holland xx

A very fond memory was the time we spent in Dunmore East during the summer of 2022 with Patrick & Kris. From jumping off rocks, with my kids egging paddy on, to kayaking around the bay, and finishing the evenings off with a few card games (you know the ones Kris!). We chased waterfalls around Connemara, cycled round the Isle of Wight, went to the odd rugby game, ran between 2 castles , were beaten by the travelator .......and the list goes on. Privileged to call you my friend. A lasting memory will be the last time we met, and when we were leaving Anya made sure she got a second hug before going home. A friend to all ages. My deepest condolences to Kris, Isaac, Ellie and Lewis. You were everything to Patrick. Keeping you all in our thoughts, and we are here for you always. John O

My dad was probably the funniest person I know causing me to have a lot of laughs over the years growing up. He was always calm collected and the best role model I ever could have asked for. A lot of the time people tell me I'm like him but if i turn out to be even half of the man he was I'll be lucky. Miss you dad πŸ™‚

Patrick was a breath of fresh air when I met him first – he was not all talk – he did. He made the boring, interesting the meetings meaningful and worthwhile and ,for both Derbyshire Police and Derby City housing – has changed the dynamic with the NHS Trust he worked for.. We have missed you Patrick and will continue to do so – but you are leaving us with a different relationship and understanding – a true legacy of your public service, and lives will be changed because of it. Your family should be doubly proud of the work you did away from home - you made all of our lives that bit brighter. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Sarita (Derbyshire Police)
